Yeah, the more vocal the debate about “should we really allow this tech in combat?” ... the more likely it is to happen.

It would definitely beat a human in the real world, because our dumb fleshy bodies can only maneuver so hard.

AI beats pilot in a computer world, not in the real world .

In the scenario tested here, AI is fed all the relevant data on its opponent location and movements. There may be a long way to go for the machines to be able to get the same level of spatial and information awareness as a human pilot out there in the blue .

H opefully ?

To temper your fears a little, it’ s much easier to teach a computer to win a computer game than it is to teach a human. The computer can test limits faster and safer and understand the game to a higher degree, partly because the game is a fixed rules simulation where there are no variables that can’t be accounted for.

I think the Human factor will still be something for a while longer.

On one hand, skynet, but on the other hand fewer human deaths (at least until skynet happens)

I’m prepared to accept what will happen when they inevitably throw the switch.

It will probably immediately send about 800 million spam emails about online Viagra, rail uselessly against identifying crosswalks for multiple minutes, and then glitch helplessly in the corner for 99% of its activity....

Except for the dozen or so that are actually programmed to work under those conditions, and they won’t be stopped, ever. Unless Linda Hamilton wants to come back again.

though the airframes are designed around the fleshly limits too.

Although maybe the next generation of airframes won’t be as restricted.

I’m more scared about armed ground track robots with guns. They can accurately pinpoint human targets and hit them quicker than any single human can.

Have a few of these in an urban or open field environment, infantry vs robot and you are pretty screwed.

I’d temper that with the supposition that this was likely the opposite of the simulations/wargames that are breathlessly reported as “Decades old and/or foreign plane/boat/tank beats new wonder weapon!”, then when you dig into the actual facts of the exercise you find out it was weighted against the F-22/F-35/whatever, all but ensuring the older whatever’s victory .

Dig into these tests and you’ll probably find that the AI was given opportunities that the meatbag couldn’t take, or was operating under a much looser ROE.

It’s not that they’re restricted, it’s more like cost savings. What’s the point of reinforcing an airframe to handle higher Gs than its pilot possibly could?

The data is all the same to the AI. The scary thing about AI is the rate of advancement, exponential growth can be truly frightening . The problem is still complex and it will still take time for AI weapons to outperform humans, but it’s a question of when and not if.

35 years ago the JSF program started, 35 years from now I’d be more surprised if we didn’t have superhuman AI for many if not most tasks.

Where our energy comes from has zero to do with how our pathetic, antiquated and neglected power grid behaves when demand spikes. The same problems occurred before the call to shift away from fossil fuels.

We should be shifting to renewable energy wherever possible because it’s better for the planet. But that should also coincide with distributed energy storage to prevent demand spikes from overwhelming the system.
